Marin Historical - just for fun

Brad Rippe, a volunteer at the Marin County Library's CALIFORNIA ROOM, has scanned, (photographically), Hiram Austin's field notes circa 1860s.

One interesting field book (1864) contains: . . . surveys . . . descriptions . . . purchasing of supplies . . . planting "spuds" . . . doodling by six year old Emma Brione(s) practicing her cursive writing . . . accounts receivable . . . and more. The field book seems to be from the Bolinas, *surf's up, dude", area.

Experienced Marin surveyors will recognize many historical land owners names as well as the first (?) County Surveyor, Eskoot, a sea captain who resided in Stinson Beach.

Apparently Hiram Austin's obituary was challenged to its correctness by his widow who resided in or near Placerville(?).

Knowing the surveyors whose steps we try to follow can be a fun, challenging and a rewarding task.

I saw a reference for Ross Landing in the beginning. It looks like it may have been for a meander line along Corte Madera Creek.

About 10 pages in I saw a reference to Pine Gulch Creek. I did a survey for Osterweis in that location and you did a survey for Martinelli next door.

I'll have to continue my review later when I have more time. Thanks for posting Mr. Danskin!
