info on Sonoma County research

Post by sako »

I'm from Santa Clara County. I'm planing on survey a property in Sonoma County, file a CR.
I'm having hard time finding the page of the County Surveyor, search for record maps, find requirements for filing a CR.
The only thing I found so far is the requirements for ROS.
Can a member for Sonoma please point me out to the right direction, thanks

Depending on where your research is located there are several places to look.

The most basic search is the AP maps. Those maps don't always have all the maps, especially older maps pre 1940/1950 or so, but they show most of the newer maps as a "123 M 12" code. Our recorder never separated out maps by type, so all maps are in the same book series, "Maps".

The CS has a graphical index that is the most useful for CRs, but shows many of the maps as well.

There are several lists of maps that contain the DPW serial numbers for another set of maps that are not always shown on the AP maps, or even the CS map index.

Then there are the various unrecorded map collections. You can check the area you are working and look at several of the recently files maps and find a local firm that has done work in the area and call them up for help. You can check out the website of our local CLSA chapter here: https://www.sonomacountyclsa.org/historicalrecords which has a small portion of the records that we have had time to scan and put on the website. You can also send me a message with where your working and I might be able to point you towards a collection. Roughly speaking, locations west of HWY 101, and the older towns are likely to have unrecorded maps that are important.

Odds are you do not need the unrecorded maps if you think you can do a CR, however sometimes the unrecorded maps are showing alternate locations that are useful to consider before you provide an estimate based on a CR versus a RoS.

Mike, I found the maps I need, thanks to Hellsangle. I just need the County Surveyor's page with requirements for filing a CR, fees, where to send the documents, how does the process work, online, etc.

Most of the maps/corner records are available in the Surveyor's Library at:

They want everything submitted digitally through their permit portal. You'll have to create an account.
The link are some hoops you have to jump through . . . which will take you as long as it took you to do your survey. LOL

There are help videos there too . . .

Good luck and have a nice Thanksgiving.

Phil, I watched the video " Digital Plan Room Training April 2023" which is basically for submitting applications online.
I use the same portal (Accela) for submitting CR to the County of Santa Clara. I have registered for Sonoma County and wanted to start the application, it ask for address, when you enter the parcel map, it says"The parcel number or address you entered is located within a City jurisdiction (or is not in Sonoma County)." Of course it's in Santa Rosa which is in Sonoma County. What am I doing wrong, as you mentioned I'm stuck at the first step.

Did you put in the address or APN? If that doesn't work because it is in the City then you might wish to submit directly to the map reviewer and send him this discusssion page's "link" (if the APN/Address failed to get you in.)

Joni de laTorre may be reached at: joni.delatorre@sonoma-county.org

Again, good luck.

Phil,
Does the County surveyor have a direct phone number to contact? I have left multiple messages to (707)565-2469 which is posted on the County Surveyor's Site as his phone number. Does Joni have a phone #? is he in the Surveyor's office?
