I beleive I have read within the codes that another surveyor can sign a map if the original surveyor who prepared the map has passed away. I've searched through hard copies, and an online search within CA Codes and have come up empty.
Does anyone know offhand the correct section to review pertaining the death of a surveyor and his unfinished work?
Thanks in advance!

You guys/gals are great!
Thats why this site is the BEST when it comes to surveying information.
I knew I read it, but my eyes passed right over that section in my searching, and the web didn't pick up on anything from the SMA.
Thanks again and I'll see you all in Fresno latter this week!

On further review, we have yet another situation that the existing SMA does not clearly cover or explain. The posted section does not cover maps that are in process to be filed, as it pertains to subdivision maps too, not record of surveys.
The current situation, if you have not already figured out is as follows:
A record of survey has been submitted a couple of years ago and had already gone through a map review (don't bring up the timeframe here please), upon their resubmittal, the original surveyor who set his tags at the corners has passed away to survey the celestrial baseline with others (first order of course).
Now the record of survey shows corners set with the orignal surveyors number, but the surveyors statement has a more recent surveyor signing the map, with a different LS number from the set points.
How do others handle this? Does the current surveyor have to reset the corners, or can they place a note on the map explaining the different LS numbers?
Once again, we thank you!

I was familiar with that section because we had been dealing with a situation similar to yours. We had partially checked Records of Survey submitted by surveyors who had subsequently died or couldn't be found. With these, however, there was no one to sign the maps showing monuments set so we filed mylars, complete with the map checker’s comments, with the following note in a box :
NOTICE! This map has been filed at the request of the County Surveyor per Section 8762(e) of the Land Surveyors Act. The time limit allowed therein had been vastly exceeded and the surveyor of record could not be located for signature and seal. The condition or existence of any monument shown on this map is unknown to this office and should be verified in the field.

Maybe you could use a similar note to make it obvious that the tags and signing surveyor are different.

Again, Thanks Gary!
This solution sounds feasible, and the current engineering firm will be requested to make sugestions to how they want to handle this. Unfortunately this firm uses an answering service and is difficult to reach via phone, so the paper trial continues.
