There may be a pincushion smaller than this one, I sure would like to see a picture of it if there is one.

The square lead is about 0.06' per side. The center (smaller) nail is the original. My best guess is the following surveyor agreed on the distance to this nail/lead, but disagreed on line.

I found this today doing a recon, just had to snap a photo of it. I also found 3 more south of this one, all with the same small headed nail in them.

today paul in Long Beach on Santa Fe south of Wardlow. One piece of lead in the walk, probably 2 foot offset to r/w on pl. Lead held two tacks, one hundredth between the two. same scenario, loved distance but line not so much.

Probably a point of tangency. Second surveyor held the record radius. ;)

Do they stick up far enough to be backsights?

(Check the display at Horizon Surveys of the nail through my tag with the shank againist the head of my nail.)

The one I found, the 2nd nail is flush and oriented 90Â° to where one would place a backsight nail. Using the large nail pointing to
the small nail, that's the line to a PL sideline. 90Â° to that line is the R/W line orientation.

Some years back at an intersection in/near Carson is a LA Cty engr and LA road dept lead and tacks ~0.10 apart. Next intersection in any direction is 1/2 mile.

Many many years ago I was doing a tract map and one of the county fb pages I referenced said ..."Set pencil cross". The notes were like 40 years old, so I wondered what the county checker would do if he saw that reference on the map, so I put it on.

"Found pencil cross per co eng fb xxx yyy" and...it passed

I'm not sure if I left the note on the map or not..
