Narrow banding questions

1. Are they actually going to follow through and do this on January 1, 2013? (going from 25 KHz to 12.5 KHz)
2. Has anyone out there had success using an ADL Radio with a Leica 500 system?

We, SFO, just updated the radio for our CGPS base with a Trimble TDL 450H. Our vendor stated that our radio was the first to be purchased from them that is narrowband compliant.

Please note in the attached booklet, in Chapter 4: Conclusions it states; ...those who fail to comply will face serious penalties such as monetary fines or license cancellation.

I cannot answer the question in regards to the Leica equipment.

The short answer is there is no indication that "they" are not going through with it... With the pressure for radio spectrum access is continually increasing, and a LOT of money is being spent to develop access to it - Remember LightSquared? Billions... And in an election year, the politicians already in place are likely to follow the lure of those billions, just as they did with LightSquared.

The booklet Brad posted says users must change over to 12.5 kHz frequency spacing on or before January 1, 2013. I believe his vendor is mistaken, or perhaps is referrring to his store location only. Various CA state Departments have purchased new, and converted some older equipment to meet these requirements. Some Trimble TrimMark 3s can be converted simply using a dealer provided "set file" - other models, I'm not so sure. Don't forget the internal transmit radios in your integrated GPS units such as R-8s. Some PacCrest radios can be converted, others, cannot. For some radios, the conversion process will be less than the price of a new TDL or ADL, but more costly than the radio is probably worth. Then take into account the time the crew will not be able to do radio based RTK, because the radio is out of service. "Failure to comply may result in serious consequences." To me that sounds like confiscation of related equipment and fines. Not worth the risk...

I'm taking it seriously enough that I actually got a license for my Motorola portables. In 20 years using a couple of different models, I never bothered with a license -- it just didn't seem necessary, even though I was vaguely aware that I was supposed to have one.

Now that I have the license, I'll get my handhelds narrowbanded and be on the air legally for the first time.

The response I got from CSDS was "The FCC has mandated narrowbanding, effective January 1st, 2013. If you have a Trimmark 3 or TDL450H, you are okay... if you have an HPB450, you need to update to the TDL450H. Trimble is offering, as an alternative to a hardware update, a replacement TDL450H at $1,845 (vs. $3,250 for a new system)".

My questions is did anyone ever have there base state registered with the FCC in the first place?

I'm trying to figure out how to get a license for a ARWEST 35w radio but can't seem to de-tangle the labyrinth of links and pdf on the FCC site despite my local chapter giving me a link.

Jim: We've already started working with our equipment dealer to get our radios switched over. One of our Pacific Crest radio's couldn't be switched, and is about to become a paper weight.
