Try to get an old, old, old copy of Davis and Foote. It will explain the way everything should have been done.
(I have a 1940 edition that is over 1,000 pages.)

I have a 1928 edition, just looked at it and never realized that Foote was a Professor of Railroad Engineering in California. Chapter 21 has some good general information on Railroad Construction Surveys. Great idea Dave.
