I applied for that position in 1996 or so. I wasn't sure I actually wanted it, but I was 3 years into my own business and thought that going through the application and interview process would be a good exercise. I'd never applied for a public agency position, and wanted to know what that part of the world looked like.
While waiting for my interview, I met another applicant who was early for his. A couple of years later he became the Yolo County Surveyor, and I enjoyed a long, congenial and productive relationship with him before he retired a year or so ago.
I wasn't offered the Solano job -- it went to a long-time Solano County surveyor -- and was ultimately glad that I didn't get it, but I still think that going through the process was good experience.
