My family and I are staying in Fortuna for one night, and we plan on taking the kids, (1 year, 3 years, and 5 years old) to see the ocean for the first time. Do you Humbolt guys have any tips on good beaches very near Fortuna that are not crowded.

South Jetty (30 min North of Fortuna), also check out the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center for orientation, it's on the way to the South Jetty. On the right day you could have two miles of beach to yourself there.
Centerville Beach west of Ferndale may be the closest and maybe reccomended just because of the charm of Ferndale. The wave slope is sometimes a bit steep at Centerville, especially for little kids. Sometimes there are ATV riders there. If you drive south from Ferndale along the coast you will see one of my favorite parts of Humboldt but I'm not sure that there is much beach access.
The temperatures have been very nice and warm (for Humboldt) but the smoke has been a factor for the last few days. Don't tell anyone but our beaches are never very crowded.
