SHN Engineers & Geologists is seeking a full-time Survey Technician for our Willits, California office. This position works directly with SHN’s Senior Land Surveyor. The Survey Technician assists in all types of field surveying activities; assists with researching of survey records including records-of-survey, deeds, and other public records; and uses field surveying methods and techniques with appropriate surveying instruments. Work typically includes preparing topographic mapping, determining property boundaries, existing conditions mapping, and construction layout.
The Survey Technician works primarily in the field as a crew chief with a crew of one or more surveyors to accomplish delegated survey tasks. Office work will also be required, and may consist of office calculations, mapping, record keeping, and other office based jobs, depending on the skills and abilities of the individual.SHN provides rural engineering-related services throughout Northern California and Oregon. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Familiarity with AutoCAD-Civil 3D and Trimble software
• Knowledge of elementary principles and practices of surveying for engineering projects, including construction calculations
• Knowledge of mathematics (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry) terminology and principles
• Ability to understand and interpret legal descriptions, record-of-survey, and parcel maps
• Ability to plan and organize the work of the field survey crew
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods, on uneven terrain, in forested and brushy conditions, on City streets, and in developed/undeveloped areas
• Proficiency in Word and Excel, and a working knowledge of computer file management and maintenance
• Ability and experience in the use of GPS survey equipment and field procedures for the collection of survey data
REQUIRED EDUCATION, REGISTRATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required; College/University coursework completed, preferred
• Valid California LSIT Certificate desired; California Licensed Professional Land Surveyor a plus
• U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
• Ability to travel up to 10% of normal work hours
• Valid California Driver's license within 30 days of hire date
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Bend, reach (overhead), or stoop for prolonged periods
• Drive a motor vehicle to perform work-related duties
• Exert force, lift, push, pull, or carry up to 30 pounds of weight
• Hear, understand, and respond to verbal information in person, by phone, or by electronic mail with the public and co-workers
• Manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a computer keyboard and mouse (make fast, simple, dexterous,
repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists)

• See, read, and understand written information in all forms, both electronic and hard copy
• Sit in a normal seated position for extended periods
• Walk or stand for prolonged periods
• Work outside in all weather conditions and in all terrains
