The importance of transparency

Post by mpallamary »

Here are a couple of interesting articles about the importance of transparency in a non profit organization. As everyone knows, CLSA is a non profit. If you have time, check them out.

Transparency is:

" . . . about putting all facts on the table, even when some of them are uncomfortable. It is about being honest and open about what actions are taken, by whom and on what grounds. It is about enabling people to have conversations where questions can be asked and answered in open and honest ways, creating mutual understanding."

Excellent subject. This discussion needs to go further than just on this forum.

For example an issue that should be discussed by any association is when there is an air of intimidation and fear of harassment or retaliation that exists and emanates from certain corners of the association's governing body. Shouldn't an association do everything in its power to allow free discourse without fear of retaliation or harassment? To avoid having directors afraid to speak up.

Another topic of transparency I hope all associations make a priority. Is that of exposure of hidden agendas. This can be one of the worst, most damaging cancers on any association and every effort should be made to ensure all directors are making decisions and votes solely with the best interests of the association in mind.
