Few BOD meeting key points

Just from memory while it's still fresh. Those of you who attended, please correct if I misremembered something.

Just came back from California Land Surveyors Association state board of directors meeting in Oakland today.

Lot of what we do are legislative efforts.

Update to 8711 is moving forward, back to legislative committee for language refinements. Goal is to require monumentation on all boundary surveys where practical and reasonable.

There is a proposal out to amend california Labor code and eliminate Land Surveying from Labor section, and have it under professions only. This was sent to legcomm.

Crownholm Site Plan lawsuit is in federal appeals court. Attorneys say his appeals make no sense, but on an off chance something goes wrong, this affects all surveying in the US.

Limit on how many times a lot line adjustment can be filed to combine parcels is being proposed.

This may be a good time to re uptake campaigning for defined accuracy standards, and continued education.

There is a good chunk of money from SB2 measure earmarked for monument preservation efforts.

It was wonderful seeing all my surveying brothers and sisters today.

I had to leave early (3pm) so I missed the SB2 monument preservation part. I’m very interested in this, our county surveyor had a suggestion regarding monument preservation funds that I was unable to discuss at the meeting.

The CLSA lobbyist, Mike Belote, suggested that the political climate may favor another try at the continuing education requirement for licensees. This is a good discussion topic to begin with your chapters. Also mentioned was a possibility of raising license fees in order to enhance enforcement activity against unlicensed practice. This discussion was very short but it may be worthwhile to investigate further.

The ESRI crowdsourced survey monument database idea suggested by our Advanced Technology Committee was exciting, I look forward to hearing more about this opportunity.

I’m sorry that I missed the chapter reports and new business but I want to thank everyone who attended and participated in the discussion. I find these Board Meetings to be personally and professionally enlightening and enriching!!

There was no discussion really, I was mentioning in passing the idea about yearly residential tax of $25,m which is likely to set aside money for residential surveys and monument preservation, as a form of an insurance fund for residential monuments. One of the excomm members, I forget who commented, there is a lot of money already exiting in monument preservation funds that can be used for similar efforts. Then it was left as, this needs to be a whole separate research and conversation to get a clear picture.
I'd love to talk to people who know more about this. We can come up with ideas on how to spend that money :)

Esri monument database sounds a lot of fun. What I have seen so far it is very similar to what we (MBI) and potentially couple other larger companies have already developed in-house. Database would be made available to all CLSA members, possibly as a membership benefit. This was just one of ideas being tossed around.

I will probably be championing Accuracy standards and continued education causes soon, at least to have some conversations going in how to implement those wisely, without being too restrictive.
