How about a forum for boundary procedures?

Post by mpallamary »

I would like to propose a forum where people can discuss boundary related issues. They can ask questions and see what kind of responses they get. Curt Brown did this for many years and he fielded questions all over the country. It was great and educational. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site. In addition to being a focused forum, it would be easier to track stuff down.

It might help direct the discussions better.

Thoughts?

Sounds good to me Mike. There are other sites like beerleg.com, but it is national and I would much prefer to have one more specific to CA.

Thanks Bryan for the note. California is very unique. There are so many cases here that they really warrant discussion. From my perspective, it functions as a continuing education forum. That is one great way to elevate the stature of the profession. To the extent there is any cross talk, etc., it can occur on the general forum.

Well, maybe in light of today's developments we can get back to our knitting.
I use this forum almost entirely for boundary resolution problem solving and continuing education. I notice things fall to pieces when there aren't any current interesting topics under discussion.

Personally, my bookmark list is too long already. Not so sure I would add another.

Subdividing PLSS sections!

Post by Keithwill »

As many may know, I have attempted to have serious discussions on subdividing PLSS sections and many believe in the "bogus theory" that is being promoted by national book writers.

This theory of course, uses only the original protracted section center lines as the sole evidence of where those boundary lines are and any and all previous surveys that are not on those theoretical lines are simply ignored.

The Rivers v Lozeau case in Florida is the epitome of this "bogus theory" and could be the case to review and discuss.

The Dykes v Arnold case in Oregon is the exact opposite in concept and also could be reviewed and discussed.

If boundaries is the discussion concept, these two cases bring out the distinct difference in surveying concepts and could be discussed at length. I have heard testimony in a State Survey Board's hearing that the "bogus theory" is the controlling concept!

Many know of course that the term "bogus theory" is what I have coined for this survey procedure that is foreign to land survey procedures.

What say you?

Subdividing PLSS sections!

Post by Keithwill »

Lee,

Good start.

One case uses the BLM Manual Chapter 3 methods and the other case uses other Chapters in the Manual that deals with resurvey methods.

Just waiting for you to write up a comparative analysis Keith. You get the facts and principles of each identified, start some discussion of the differences, pros & cons, and I'm sure it will generate some discussion.

Simply tossing around the term "bogus theory" doesn't give folks much to grab onto and comment about.

Subdividing PLSS sections!

Post by Keithwill »

I really can't believe that land surveyors do not know the difference between the methods as espoused in the recent Clark book on using only the original protracted center lines of the PLSS sections and the regular method of retracing/resurveying established center lines that do not follow the original protracted center lines.

When I have more time, I may explain the difference to those who don't know.

Wow! I thought you were talking about the Lucas book. (Not used to coy approaches on this board.)

Back to the topic in this thread, I don't think there's enough traffic in the "General Discussion" thread for anything to get lost. Having a new forum won't improve search results.

I suggest that new "big idea" threads have a good thread description, and the original poster add a second post marked "reserved" for updates or a thread summary. That is, the first post is what it is, but the second is basically empty. When a solution or summary can be posted, it gets edited into the second post.

Mike,
I love the idea! Reading about boundary solutions is really the only reason why I come to the forum.
