Back in 1891, the state Surveyor General would mail notices to each County Recorder of newly licensed land surveyors.
Here is the first such correspondence to Tuolumne County.

The Marin County Recorder's Office has a CD-ROM of transmittals to the various counties. On that same CD-ROM was cattle branding registrations. Using these LS transmittals was fun chasing down a long ago local surveyor. (I think I sent a copy of this digital list to Dallas or Ric at BPELSG.)
